چکیده

Similarity solutions for laminar two-fluid jets and wakes are derived in the boundary-layer approximation. Planar and axisymmetric fan jets as well as classical and momentumless planar wakes are considered. The interface between the immiscible fluids is stabilized by the action of gravity, with the heavier fluid, taken to be a liquid, placed beneath the lighter fluid. Velocity profiles for the jets and the classical wake depend intimately, but differently, on the parameter x 5r1m1 /r2m2 , where r i and m i are, respectively, the density and absolute viscosity of the fluid in the upper (i51) and lower (i52) fluid domains, while the momentumless wake profile depends on the parameter V5r1m2 /r2m1 . Generally, all interfaces deflect from horizontal except the fan jet. However, while the interface for the classical planar two-fluid wake is never flat, the interfaces for the planar jet and the momentumless wake become flat in the particular case m15m2 . Velocity profiles illustrating the strongly asymmetrical jet and wake profiles that arise in air-over-water, oil-over-water, and air-over-oil flows are presented. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1651481#

Exploratory Data Analysis of The KelvinHelmholtz instability in Jets

The KelvinHelmholtz (KH) instability is a fundamental wave instability that is frequently observed in all kinds of shear layer (jets, wakes, atmospheric air currents etc). The study of KH-instability, coherent flow structures has a major impact in understanding the fundamentals of fluid dynamics. Therefore there is a need for methods that can identify and analyse these structures. In this Final...

Exact solutions of the Navier–Stokes equations having steady vortex structures

We present two classes of exact solutions of the Navier–Stokes equations, which describe steady vortex structures with two-dimensional symmetry in an infinite fluid. The first is a class of similarity solutions obtained by conformal mapping of the Burgers vortex sheet to produce wavy sheets, stars, flowers and other vorticity patterns. The second is a class of non-similarity solutions obtained ...

Heat Transfer under Double Turbulent Pulsating Jets Impinging on a Flat Surface

In this study, the numerical analysis of turbulent flow and heat transfer of double pulsating impinging jets on a flat surface has been investigated. The unsteady two-dimensional numerical solution for two similar and dissimilar jets was performed using the RNG k-ε model. The results showed that the RNG k-ε model has more satisfactory predictions of the Nusselt number distribution. Comparisons ...

Integral Solution for the Mean Flow Profiles of Turbulent Jets, Plumes, and Wakes

Integral methods are used to derive similarity solutions for several quantities of interest including the cross-stream velocity, Reynolds stress, the dominant turbulent kinetic energy production term, and eddy diffusivities of momentum and heat for axisymmetric and planar turbulent jets, plumes, and wakes. A universal constant is evaluated for axisymmetric and planar plumes. The cross-stream ve...

Conditional scalar dissipation rates in turbulent wakes, jets, and boundary layers

The expected value EXsE(x,O=Oc) of the dissipation rate x of a passive scalar 0 conditioned on the scalar value 6=0e has been measured in three varieties of turbulent shear flows: heated wakes, dyed liquid jets, and the atmospheric surface layer. The quantity Ex depends fairly strongly on 19, and on the flow. For the wake, Ex exhibits two peaks-one on the low-temperature end and the other on th...
